One critical piece of data came out of this year’s study that was very interesting. Apparently, we’re not treating our guests very well. Between Covid services being limited, struggles finding staff, and rising costs, the guests we all rely on are at a breaking point. We asked travelers a series of open-ended questions to help uncover hidden objections that prevent someone from booking a stay. What we found was not surprising, but what was surprising was how uniform the responses were to the question, &#8220;What is one thing a hotel could do that would convince you to book a stay?&#8220;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5 Things Leisure Travelers Need You To Do Before They Book:</h2>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Free Nights: The most commonly requested sale was for free nights based on the length of the stay. While some respondents were interested in a percentage discount, it appears that most respondents were looking for a reason to extend their stay. We recommend testing your promotional messaging: does “stay 4 nights, get the 5th for free” or “20% off” work better for your audience?</li>



<li>Free Cancellation: This request appeared frequently in both this section and other responses – travelers need the assurance that they can cancel their trip without penalty if something comes up.</li>



<li>Reasonable Rates: Respondents consistently asked for fair and reasonable prices, in addition to rate guarantees. Respondents also noted that sales are important, but what they’re really looking for is clear pricing that doesn’t feel excessive.</li>



<li>Bring Back Breakfast: Continental breakfast was largely lost to the Covid pandemic due to cleanliness concerns. Respondents are eager to find a property that includes breakfast in their rate – and the same respondents often asked for lower prices.</li>



<li>No More Resort Fees: Respondents are frustrated with hidden fees and resort fees that feel unnecessary.</li>

Hotel Marketing Podcast: Episode 239 – 11 Social Media Post Ideas for Hotels

In today’s podcast we’re going to cover what you do when you just did something really, really stupid.&nbsp; Case in point, the Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh, NY. The Crossroads, very aptly named, had a decision in front of them and they did not choose the right path.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Now before we get too in depth into the situation I’ve got a trigger alert.&nbsp; Today we’re covering how the Crossroads Hotel opted to receive a large group of migrants/refugees/illegals/asylum seekers or whatever you prefer to call those who have crossed the US border.&nbsp; We will not be talking about the politics of this at all, nor will we be providing any commentary on the US border crisis.&nbsp; However we will be talking about what happens when you alienate other guests.&nbsp; In this case, at least two large blocks of rooms reserved by a wedding party for guests.



This has been in the news across the nation as of this recording in May, 2023 and our topic is not about the decision to displace booked reservations for other opportunities.&nbsp; Our topic is about how you handle the social and PR fallout when you make a decision that impacts your guests in an incredibly negative way.



First, let’s look at five strategies you can employ when a PR disaster strikes:

<li>Turn lemons into lemonade</li>



<li>Embrace and turn</li>



<li>Own up and apologize</li>



<li>Fight</li>



<li>Passively monitor</li>
</ol>



In this case The Crossroads really only have two options, they can Embrace and Turn, or they can Own Up And Apologize. Since so much time has past since the 1st news dropped, embrace and turn is pretty much off the table.&nbsp; This leaves us with owning up and apologizing.&nbsp;&nbsp;



So how can they do that?&nbsp; For this we’ll turn to another set of five items, from Forbes Magazine, the&nbsp; The 5 “A’s” Of A PR Crisis.



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Assess. Calmly, despite the stress, identify the issue and determine the best course of action.</li>



<li>Admit. If you were at fault (or worse, lying) admit the transgression quickly and directly</li>



<li>Address. Specifically address what you are admitting and apologizing for.&nbsp; Don’t mince words, be direct and succinct.</li>



<li>Atone. Make right what you made wrong.&nbsp; Detail out your plan to ensure (1) you fix the issue and (2) layout out plan for it to not happen again.</li>



<li>Adapt. Move on to be a better person or company.&nbsp; It’s time to begin repairing and rebuilding you social capital</li>
</ol>



First and foremost: Lead with understanding and sympathy.



How did Choice Hotels handle the situation?

<li>Why did Choice not at least make a statement of sympathy and looked at how they could have improved the situation.&nbsp; Example is how Chic-fl-a supports disasters</li>
</ul>



How did the individual property handle the situation?

<li>You HAVE to address the people impacted&nbsp;</li>



<li>“No Comment” is ALWAYS the wrong answer

<li>Switch the conversation back to why the property was in a bad spot.</li>



<li>How could the hotel have made this into a positive</li>

It’s a bit cliche how often I say it, but “we’ve got a special episode for you today!”&nbsp; We have both Ken Reig, president, and Rob Langenback, COO, of Eight Oh Two Marketing. <a href="https://eightohtwo.com/">&nbsp;Eight Oh Two</a> is a powerhouse in the search marketing world with over 15 years of helping major brands like Orvis, Geneverse, RBX, and others succeed through forward-thinking search optimization and search marketing strategies.&nbsp;&nbsp;



To set the stage, we have all heard and experienced ChatGPT and Microsoft’s integration of an AI-based question and answer system into the Bing search engine.&nbsp; The first mover advantage has definitely been on full display and Microsoft has garnered a lot of attention and a significant uptick in the share of the search market.&nbsp;&nbsp;



But never underestimate the power of Google, who has been working on their own platform with Bard (<a href="https://bard.google.com/">bard.google.com</a>).&nbsp; That’s the topic for today where we will learn more about Google’s Magi project as well as significant changes to how the search algorithm will have a major impact on hoteliers and marketers in general.



What is Project Magi?



Project Magi is Google’s name for their AI integration programs in search.&nbsp; This includes both the capabilities of Bard, but also a suite of changes to how the user interacts with the search engine as well as the results pages.



How will Project Magi be rolled into the search experience?



To be clear &#8211; it is impossible for us to interpret and predict how these changes might impact SEO and SEM strategies. Although there is a lot of “expert” commentary already, it is 100% speculation until we see a new SERP and analyze where clients and competitors come out. We go through this process regularly with the bigger algorithm updates, and we will do it again to protect the interests of our partners, as should any good marketer.&nbsp; While we can only speculate at this time some things you can expect are:



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>A more integrated approach to search and chat responses</li>



<li>Google will likely rely more on building query intent via follow up questions to a search.&nbsp; An example might be a search for “place to stay in Destin, FL” would include a follow up “are you looking for a hotel or a vacation rental”</li>



<li>Expect to see more types of content results beyond the existing paid ads, organic results, Metasearch results, knowledge boxes and others.&nbsp; Google is already integrating more photos, videos, reels, and other types of content into the SERP and you can expect that to continue to grow.</li>



<li>Google is not known to make massive shifts in the SERP appearance.&nbsp; Approximately 90% of Googles revenue comes through advertising and they are going to be cautious with updates.</li>
</ul>



How will Google’s AI tools change the search algorithms behind the scenes?



This is the major point of debate and the only safe thing to say now is no one knows definitively what changes google is making in the algorithm.&nbsp; What we do know is they want to achieve two primary goals: increase ad revenue, and provide valuable results based on search intent.&nbsp; Don’t expect many technical changes related to site coding, markup, and so forth since these have all been largely addressed in past algo updates.&nbsp; You can expect content, of multiple types, to continue to become more and more relevant.&nbsp; The saying, “content is king,” is more true than ever.



What can hoteliers do to take advantage of the changes?

Think about the role AI and GPT systems can play in your hotel marketing.&nbsp; While everyone at this point, that is not living under a rock knows about ChatGPT, most are very undereducated in how AI is going to completely upend the hotel marketing and operations world.



Step 1: Log in to chat.openai.com and give the famous chatbot a try.&nbsp; Keep in mind that its dataset is not real-time and the last data loaded is from 2021.



Step 2: Read up on AutoGPT and how you can string together multiple prompts to complete some crazy complex tasks, including live web searches.



Step 3: Have a cold beverage while you contemplate what areas can be improved with AI, and which ones need to remain in the realm of humans.

Hotel Marketing Podcast Episode 232 – How ChatGPT and AI Will Shake Hotel Marketing to the Core

Welcome to episode 231 of the Hotel Marketing Podcast.  In this short fuze edition of the podcast, we are going to go over 5 easy tests that you can launch today (or tomorrow if you’re busy) and start seeing an improvement in your hotel’s online conversion rate.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hotel Test #1: A/B Testing</h2>



Create a simple A/B or multivariate test using Google Optimize (while you still can, it goes away on September 30, 2023). These tests, can create small increases in your site conversion rate that build on each other to create a booking powerhouse. Just a few tests you can run at practically no cost via Optimize:

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hotel Test #2: User Testing</h2>



Usertesting platforms, such as UserTesting.com, are fantastic tools to see exactly what your site visitors experience when deciding to make a booking. However, software is not needed here. Simply talking with your guests and shadowing them while they browse your site will lead to countless optimization opportunities and testing ideas.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hotel Test #3: Heatmap and Scroll Maps</h2>



Heatmapping and Scrollmapping systems such as Microsoft Clarity, Crazy Egg, Hotjar and others are amazing tools to track user clicks and movements on your website and identify which areas are getting the most attention. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hotel Test #4: Performance testing</h2>



Take off your marketer hat and put on your developer hat to test your site&#8217;s technical performance. An easy way to start is by simply right-clicking on your site in Chrom and choosing &#8220;inspect.&#8221; From there click on the Lighthouse tab and run a report to gain insights into how Google sees your site and specific issues that are preventing you from achieving the highest scores possible. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hotel Test #5: Mobile First Thining and Testing</h2>



For most hoteliers upwards of 70% of web users are on mobile devices. Don&#8217;t let your head get stuck in your desktop, spend time browsing your site like a customer&#8230; on your phone. From there you can create tests and optimizations to maximize the ability for a guest to book direct on the device of their choice.







In conclusion, now is the perfect time to start with some simple tests to improve your hotel&#8217;s conversion rate. Starting simple now will lead to significantly improved performance by the end of the year.
