<p>Back in July of this year, everyone realized Google was really, really serious about the switch from Universal Analytics to GA4 and we were all thrown into this new exciting world of analytics. We’ve got a full cast today with Alyssa, Jeremy, and Connor. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">6 Ways to Make GA4 Work for You<a href=""></a></h3>

<li><strong>Filter out internal traffic</strong>
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Internal traffic can create massive problems and inaccuracies in reporting.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Imagine your analytics team completing a weekly booking engine test on both mobile and desktop. Your data would theoretically show a near 100% conversion rate for users in that geographic area with 8 bookings each month.&nbsp; This is then compounded by everyone in your organization as well as potentially everyone staying at your property.</li>



<li>By filtering out traffic you don’t want to track in a traditional sense you’ll be able to have a much more accurate picture of what your potential guests are doing on your site.</li>



<li>Luckily this process is very simple:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Find your IP address and those you feel should not be in your main datasets.</li>



<li>Go to your admin settings &gt; data streams &gt; select the data stream (typically web traffic) &gt; Configure tag settings &gt; select “show more” &gt; click “define internal traffic”</li>



<li>Within this area, you can add a name and how you would like to identify the traffic such as IP range, specific IP address, and other options.</li>



<li>The benefit of this system is you can also set multiple types of traffic such as:

<li>Internal company traffic</li>



<li>Agency traffic</li>



<li>In-house guest, etc.</li>



<li>Wifi landing page</li>
</ol>

</li>



<li>Once your traffic filters are set you can then run reports as usual with a much higher degree of accuracy.&nbsp; Best of all, you can always include this traffic based on your reporting needs.&nbsp;</li>

<li>Tracking the engaged sessions helps you qualify the value of your website’s content based on how your audience interacts with it.

<li>Identify content that resonates with your audience and holds their attention.</li>



<li>Optimize underperforming pages by analyzing their engagement metrics.</li>



<li>Include relevant and valuable CTAs to guide users through their journey.</li>



<li>Compare engaged sessions across different user segments to gain deeper insights.</li>



<li>Improve the overall user experience by tailoring your content based on engagement patterns.</li>

<li>Will not always work if the Data.Layer is not set up 100% to Google’s specifications.

<li>&nbsp;Data won’t be pulled or can pull data from the wrong data.layer element.</li>
</ol>
</li>



<li>Use this if the available metrics cover everything you need. If not, I’d recommend building out the rest of the events you want using Google Tag Manager (GTM)</li>

<li>“applied to prevent anyone viewing a report or exploration from inferring the identity of individual users based on demographics, interests, or other signals present in the data” &#8211; Google</li>



<li>Applied when Google Signals is enabled &#8211; collects demographic data and lets properties reuse analytics audiences in Google Ads</li>



<li>Thresholding cannot be adjusted</li>



<li>Thresholding may interfere with your custom reporting

<li>Adjust your report date range to increase the number of users that may have triggered your event(s)</li>
</ol>
</li>



<li>Predictive metrics/audiences: prerequisites are required</li>
</ol>
</li>
</ol>

<li><strong>Utilize the “first user” dimensions</strong>
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>The First User dimension represents the source / medium that acquired<strong> the user in the first session</strong><strong>.</strong></li>



<li>This dimension provides insight into the channels users are first coming to your site, and this is useful in itself.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Look at this alongside the session default channel group &#8211; a channel we’ve typically used to analyze data (either in a report or an exploration), and you can gain a better understanding of the path from <strong>initial acquisition through to conversion.&nbsp;</strong>

<li>Gain a deeper understanding of user acquisition channels and their impact on conversions.</li>
</ol>
</li>



<li>By leveraging the &#8220;first user&#8221; dimensions, you can:

<li>Analyze the actions users take during their initial visits to identify potential bottlenecks.</li>



<li>Improve landing pages and user flows based on insights derived from first user data.</li>



<li>Provide a seamless and personalized experience that encourages further engagement.</li>

<p>Defining age groups:</p>

<li>Baby boomers are the eldest, born between the years 1946 and 1964.</li>



<li>Generation X follows, and they were born between 1965 and 1980.</li>



<li>Next comes Generation Y (more commonly known as Millennials), born between roughly 1981 and 1994.</li>



<li>The youngest generation in today’s workforce is <a href="https://www.zenefits.com/workest/the-gen-z-workforce-who-they-are-and-what-they-want/">Gen Z</a>, who were born between 1995 and 2009.</li>
</ul>



<p>“Everything you think you know about millennials? Concentrate it tenfold, and you get Gen Z. Other generations are a continuum, but the millennial-to-Gen-Z span is a cliff. <li>This is the first group of people that has had around the clock internet connectivity.&nbsp;</li>

<p>While Baby Boomers and Generation X may have more disposable income, data shows that younger generations <strong>are more likely to travel</strong> and hoteliers must be mindful of this.</p>



<p>According to a recent <strong>American Express global travel report </strong>84% of Gen Z and Millennial respondents agreed that they would rather take a dream vacation than purchase a new luxury item.&nbsp;</p>

<li>Accommodate the wellness traveler &gt; In this post-pandemic world, the focus on health is only expected to grow, which means wellness travel is a permanent sector of the hospitality industry. From massage to meditation, accommodating the wellness traveler can even be as simple as improving your on-site fitness facility.</li>



<li>Support sustainable business practices by going green where possible&nbsp;</li>



<li>Highlight top-notch reviews on social media or directly on your website</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>Tempo</strong> by Hilton: Each Tempo location offers well-being amenities, modern fitness facilities, and flexible meeting/working spaces.&nbsp;</li>

It&#8217;s a great benefit, but not critical for your loyalty program&#8217;s success.  Can you succeed without one? Absolutely.  However, consider training your staff to welcome loyal guests in a special way online, on the phone, and in person.</li>



<li><strong>Free Perks:</strong> This is the cornerstone of your hotel&#8217;s loyalty program and over 75% of our <a href="https://admin.travelboommarketing.com/2023-leisure-travel-trends-study/">Leisure Travel Study</a> respondents noted it was somewhat or very important.  A bottle of water and a snack at check-in can go a long way. Additional perks such as a rate lock guarantee, free Wi-Fi, and more all help win guests to your program.</li>



<li><strong>Future Discounts:</strong> Guests love knowing they can get a better deal next time they visit.  Have a great way to offer the best available rate to your loyal guests.  However, what they really want is instant discounts.</li>



<li><strong>Instant Discounts:</strong> This ranked as the #1 most important benefit of a loyalty program guests were expecting.  Not only do you need to make sure they&#8217;re getting the best deal, they need to get a deal that will win them over compared to some of the OTA&#8217;s incredibly compelling programs.</li>



<li><strong>Food &amp; Beverage Discounts:</strong> Oddly enough F&amp;B discounts didn&#8217;t rank as highly compared to the other loyalty program attributes.  This is not to say it&#8217;s not important and anything you can add to the suite of benefits will help win guests to your property.</li>

What we found was not surprising, but what was surprising was how uniform the responses were to the question, &#8220;<strong>What is one thing a hotel could do that would convince you to book a stay?</strong>&#8220;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5 Things Leisure Travelers Need You To Do Before They Book:</strong></h2>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Free Nights: </strong>The most commonly requested sale was for free nights based on the length of the stay. While some respondents were interested in a percentage discount, it appears that most respondents were looking for a reason to extend their stay. We recommend testing your promotional messaging: does “stay 4 nights, get the 5th for free” or “20% off” work better for your audience?</li>



<li><strong>Free Cancellation: </strong>This request appeared frequently in both this section and other responses – travelers need the assurance that they can cancel their trip without penalty if something comes up.</li>



<li><strong>Reasonable Rates: </strong>Respondents consistently asked for fair and reasonable prices, in addition to rate guarantees. Respondents also noted that sales are important, but what they’re really looking for is clear pricing that doesn’t feel excessive.</li>



<li><strong>Bring Back Breakfast:</strong> Continental breakfast was largely lost to the Covid pandemic due to cleanliness concerns. Respondents are eager to find a property that includes breakfast in their rate – and the same respondents often asked for lower prices.</li>



<li><strong>No More Resort Fees:</strong> Respondents are frustrated with hidden fees and resort fees that feel unnecessary.</li>

Hotel Marketing Podcast: Episode 239 – 11 Social Media Post Ideas for Hotels


<p>In today’s podcast we’re going to cover what you do when you just did something really, really stupid.&nbsp; Case in point, the Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh, NY. The Crossroads, very aptly named, had a decision in front of them and they did not choose the right path.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>Now before we get too in depth into the situation I’ve got a trigger alert.&nbsp; Today we’re covering how the Crossroads Hotel opted to receive a large group of migrants/refugees/illegals/asylum seekers or whatever you prefer to call those who have crossed the US border.&nbsp; We will not be talking about the politics of this at all, nor will we be providing any commentary on the US border crisis.&nbsp; However we will be talking about what happens when you alienate other guests.&nbsp; In this case, at least two large blocks of rooms reserved by a wedding party for guests.</p>



<p>This has been in the news across the nation as of this recording in May, 2023 and our topic is not about the decision to displace booked reservations for other opportunities.&nbsp; Our topic is about how you handle the social and PR fallout when you make a decision that impacts your guests in an incredibly negative way.</p>



<p>First, let’s look at five strategies you can employ when a PR disaster strikes:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Turn lemons into lemonade</li>



<li>Embrace and turn</li>



<li>Own up and apologize</li>



<li>Fight</li>



<li>Passively monitor</li>
</ol>



<p>In this case The Crossroads really only have two options, they can <strong>Embrace and Turn</strong>, or they can <strong>Own Up And Apologize</strong>. Since so much time has past since the 1st news dropped, embrace and turn is pretty much off the table.&nbsp; This leaves us with owning up and apologizing.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>So how can they do that?&nbsp; For this we’ll turn to another set of five items, from Forbes Magazine, the&nbsp; The 5 “A’s” Of A PR Crisis.</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Assess. Calmly, despite the stress, identify the issue and determine the best course of action.</li>



<li>Admit. If you were at fault (or worse, lying) admit the transgression quickly and directly</li>



<li>Address. Specifically address what you are admitting and apologizing for.&nbsp; Don’t mince words, be direct and succinct.</li>



<li>Atone. Make right what you made wrong.&nbsp; Detail out your plan to ensure (1) you fix the issue and (2) layout out plan for it to not happen again.</li>



<li>Adapt. Move on to be a better person or company.&nbsp; It’s time to begin repairing and rebuilding you social capital</li>
</ol>



<p><strong>First and foremost: Lead with understanding and sympathy.</strong></p>

<p>It’s a bit cliche how often I say it, but “we’ve got a special episode for you today!”&nbsp; We have both Ken Reig, president, and Rob Langenback, COO, of Eight Oh Two Marketing. <a href="https://eightohtwo.com/">&nbsp;Eight Oh Two</a> is a powerhouse in the search marketing world with over 15 years of helping major brands like Orvis, Geneverse, RBX, and others succeed through forward-thinking search optimization and search marketing strategies.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>To set the stage, we have all heard and experienced ChatGPT and Microsoft’s integration of an AI-based question and answer system into the Bing search engine.&nbsp; The first mover advantage has definitely been on full display and Microsoft has garnered a lot of attention and a significant uptick in the share of the search market.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>But never underestimate the power of Google, who has been working on their own platform with Bard (<a href="https://bard.google.com/">bard.google.com</a>).&nbsp; That’s the topic for today where we will learn more about Google’s Magi project as well as significant changes to how the search algorithm will have a major impact on hoteliers and marketers in general.</p>



<p><strong>What is Project Magi?</strong></p>



<p>Project Magi is Google’s name for their AI integration programs in search.&nbsp; This includes both the capabilities of Bard, but also a suite of changes to how the user interacts with the search engine as well as the results pages.</p>



<p><strong>How will Project Magi be rolled into the search experience?</strong></p>



<p>To be clear &#8211; it is impossible for us to interpret and predict how these changes might impact SEO and SEM strategies. Although there is a lot of “expert” commentary already, it is 100% speculation until we see a new SERP and analyze where clients and competitors come out. We go through this process regularly with the bigger algorithm updates, and we will do it again to protect the interests of our partners, as should any good marketer.&nbsp; While we can only speculate at this time some things you can expect are:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>A more integrated approach to search and chat responses</li>



<li>Google will likely rely more on building query intent via follow up questions to a search.&nbsp; An example might be a search for “place to stay in Destin, FL” would include a follow up “are you looking for a hotel or a vacation rental”</li>



<li>Expect to see more types of content results beyond the existing paid ads, organic results, Metasearch results, knowledge boxes and others.&nbsp; Google is already integrating more photos, videos, reels, and other types of content into the SERP and you can expect that to continue to grow.</li>



<li>Google is not known to make massive shifts in the SERP appearance.&nbsp; Approximately 90% of Googles revenue comes through advertising and they are going to be cautious with updates.</li>
</ul>



<p><strong>How will Google’s AI tools change the search algorithms behind the scenes?</strong></p>



<p>This is the major point of debate and the only safe thing to say now is no one knows definitively what changes google is making in the algorithm.&nbsp; What we do know is they want to achieve two primary goals: increase ad revenue, and provide valuable results based on search intent.&nbsp; Don’t expect many technical changes related to site coding, markup, and so forth since these have all been largely addressed in past algo updates.&nbsp; You can expect content, of multiple types, to continue to become more and more relevant.&nbsp; The saying, “content is king,” is more true than ever.</p>

<p>Think about the role AI and GPT systems can play in your hotel marketing.&nbsp; While everyone at this point, that is not living under a rock knows about ChatGPT, most are very undereducated in how AI is going to completely upend the hotel marketing and operations world.</p>



<p><strong>Step 1: Log in</strong> to chat.openai.com and give the famous chatbot a try.&nbsp; Keep in mind that its dataset is not real-time and the last data loaded is from 2021.</p>



<p><strong>Step 2: </strong>Read up on AutoGPT and how you can string together multiple prompts to complete some crazy complex tasks, including live web searches.</p>



<p><strong>Step 3:</strong> Have a cold beverage while you contemplate what areas can be improved with AI, and which ones need to remain in the realm of humans.</p>
